Fun Fact
The time between the Apollo 11 spacecraft's touchdown on the moon and Neil Armstrong's first step on the lunar surface was about 2 hours and 31 minutes.
Here is a timeline of the events leading up to Armstrong's first step on the moon:
• At 4:17 p.m. Eastern Time on July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 spacecraft's lunar module, Eagle, landed on the moon.
• After landing, Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, the other astronaut on board Eagle, spent about an hour and a half preparing for the moonwalk. This included donning their space suits, checking the equipment, and conducting a series of tests and checks to ensure that everything was in working order.
• At 6:39 p.m., Armstrong opened the hatch of the lunar module and began the descent down the ladder.
• At 6:56 p.m., Armstrong set foot on the moon, becoming the first human to walk on another celestial body. As he stepped off the ladder, he famously declared, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
