Fun Fact

On July 20, 1969, at 4:17 p.m. Eastern Time, NASA's Apollo 11 spacecraft landed on the moon, marking the first time humans had ever set foot on another celestial body. The landing was a tense and critical moment in the mission, as the spacecraft's lunar module, Eagle, had to navigate a complex descent and landing sequence.

As Eagle approached the moon's surface, it was about 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the surface and falling at a speed of about 100 mph (160 km/h). At this point, the spacecraft's computer system alerted the astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, to a potential problem with the landing gear. Armstrong took manual control of the spacecraft and made a series of adjustments to the descent trajectory to avoid a large boulder field.

The final descent to the moon's surface took about 3 minutes, and as the spacecraft descended, Armstrong and Aldrin could see the moon's surface rushing up to meet them. Just before touchdown, Armstrong called out the altitude and velocity readings: "60 seconds. Descent engine command override off. 30 seconds. Engine arm off. Houston, tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed."
